Using Transient Digital Identities for Controlling Document and Email Access
Avoco Secure have developed a technology that creates transient digital certificates that are used as a form of digital identify. This technology can potentially be used to design systems that can secure documents based on a users logon credentials. Unlike access control lists, the security applied is at a much more granular content level. In this way, the security of the document would remain persistent, inside and outside of the system, so that if a document is saved locally outside of the system, the user would need to again logon to the system before access would be gained. In addition, security policies on the use of the document, at the content level, such as date restrictions, no copying content, etc. can be associated with the individual identity of the user.
The types of systems that can benefit from this identity enabled security policy technique are online authoring applications, e.g. Google Docs, online document collaboration portals, enterprise content management systems.
